We departed Lava Beds and headed out of the park on highway 139 towards Susanville, CA. However, Reno has become a place to avoid – too much traffic – so, we turned east thru Alturas, across the mountains to Cedarville, CA, where we turn south on a road that eventually turns into Nevada 447. That road runs down to Pyramid Lake and ends up in Wadsworth where we connected to Nevada 50.
The only notable thing (we could talk for hours about all the neat rock formations, but you have to see them to believe them) was lunch at Bruno’s Country Club where we had the best french fries we’ve had since we left Germany. Light and crispy and tasty! Our sandwiches were terrific and the people most pleasant. Since most people don’t go this way, we encourage you to go a different way next time so that you can go through Gerlach, NV and stop at Bruno’s. Oh, and the strawberry/rhubarb was pretty good, too!
One note: the road is rough in some places (but not bad), narrow and twisty in some places (just slow down), so, we’re not sure you’d want to take a big rig through there.
We ended up staying over night in Fallon at the Fallon RV park. Did I tell you we don’t particularly like RV parks anymore? This one, even though it’s a Good Sam park, leaves a lot to be desired. It’s only saving grace is that it is just slightly better than anything else in town.
Today we’re off to explore the outback with a trip to a ghost town and a dinosaur park; both way out in the middle of Nowhere, Nevada. Stay tuned!
